Robin Takes The Scenic Route

April Writing Challenges & Camp Nano Progress Week 2

4/10/2020

The second week of April  is already upon us and wow! You really don't understand how time flies until you have too much to do and not enough time to seemingly accomplish those things. This is why time drags so slowly for kids. Can I shift some of these responsibilities to someone else? No?

OK, OK, I know. Time to get moving on those challenge responses!

#30DaySongChallenge Days 4 - 9

I'm really having fun with this challenge, especially since my husband decided to play along. It's great to see which songs he thinks of because he had a totally different musical upbringing than I did. My parents were all about classic country music and southern gospel, while his were more in the classic rock/folk rock zone.
Here are my responses for the past week's prompts. (Plus the first two days of the challenge, since I didn't think two songs in one playlist was very cool.):
  • Day 3 - Song that reminds you of summertime - "Dandelion Wine" by Blackmore's Night
  • Day 4 - Song that reminds you of someone you'd rather forget - "Phantom of the Opera" from the soundtrack
  • Day 5 - Song that needs to be played loud - "They Will Die" (NASUS Dubstep)
  • Day 6 - Song that makes you want to dance - "Happy" by Pharrell Williams
  • Day 7 - Song to drive to - Riders on the Storm remix feat. Snoop Dogg
  • Day 8 - Song about drugs or alcohol - "Necktie Remedy" by Project 86
  • Day 9 - A song that makes you happy - "Pocketful of Sunshine" by Natasha Bedingfield

#CampNanoApril2020 - What's the Difference Between Camp Nano and Nanowrimo?

It's pretty simple. In a Camp Nano event, participants can work on a story they've already written. They can also set their own type of goal: pages/day or word count.
During Nanowrimo, the focus is more on starting a new novel and the goal is preset at 50k words for adults and 30k for younger folks in grades K-12.
Next week, I'll talk a little about my first Nano and Camp Nano experiences.

#1WordPromptChallenge Week 2

Here were the prompts for the past week. See the snippets (if applicable) below the list. And as previously mentioned, if this is blank, it's because I wasn't able to upload the info before my scheduled post went out. I'll update as I can if that's the case. You can read all the snippets below.
  • Day 3 - Fall - I actually created the photo for this prompt and then forgot to post it. Y'all! The changes to my daily routine are minimal but even so, they've scattered my whole process and it's been so hard to stay on track with anything.
  • Day 4 - Whisper - I missed this day, but got caught up on the next. I've been spending most of my time trying to make sure I'm walking during the work week like I should be and making masks for our local medical facility. That task is really stressing me out. Supplies are not so easy to come by and cutting corners doesn't sit well with me, especially when it comes to the health of others. I'm doing what I can with what I have and praying it's going to help and be a blessing to someone. My mom and sister are also involved in the project so that's been a huge help.
  • Day 5 - Shout - I caught up day four, like I mentioned earlier, and also shared a snippet for day five.
  • Day 6 - Happy - It was easy to find a snippet for this prompt. I knew right where to go in my manuscript.
  • Day 7 - Sad - I missed this day, getting caught up in cutting mask patterns out. But I did get caught up. :)
  • Day 8 - Control - I was going to post for day 7 and day 8, but it was late and my eyes were gritty with exhaustion, so I skipped another day.
  • Day 9 - Free - Finally caught up! I hate when I get behind on these prompts. In most cases, I know there's a snippet somewhere in my manuscript that will match up at least in a round-about way to the daily prompt. It's frustrating when I miss, but oh, so awesome when I find matches later on!
Day 3 - Fall
"Well?" Kol's sudden question behind her made her jump and she would have tumbled the rest of the way had he not caught her once again. "Falling must be a favorite pastime."

Day 4 - Whisper
"She comes." Edrea's voice pushed gently through the other thoughts in the Serafin's mind, much the way wind moved through the leaves in the canopy.

Day 5 - Shout
"Asunder?!" Her shriek ripped through the cavern as the vines tightened.

Day 6 - Happy
"What was that all about?" he grumbled to his student, whose happiness brightened in spite of the unveiled threat.
"It's alright," she breathed. "It wasn't me. I can't tell you why he was angry but it wasn't because of me."

Day 7 - Sad
“Come on,” he urged as he grabbed for her hand. She slipped out of his reach and shifted herself backward.
“What if I’m unteachable?”
“What?” His jaw dropped. This was not the Serafin'an he knew from vesat’ya training. Careful maneuvering would be required. He swam toward her, sinking a bit so he could look up into her bowed face. She turned away but he caught her face in both of his hands, drawing her closer. “Are my ears so filled with water that I could've heard wrong?” When her eyes clouded with confusion he added, “I thought I heard you question my ability as a teacher.” He glared at her. “You asked for my help. Do you know how much it hurt to be suddenly thrust into this form?”
At that, she looked at him, really looked at him, nodding slowly. If they’d been on land, he was certain he’d see tears forming in those eyes.

Day 8 - Control
“Afraid of the water, eiya?” He smirked. This trial would be completed whether she liked it or not. Running away had never been so strong a temptation. He must have sensed it because her wrist was suddenly gripped in a vice and she was pulled forward without a choice.

Day 9 - Free
He cut her off as he stood. “Stop it,” he growled. “That’s not what I meant.” How could he explain? “I just think we should set this stuff aside for awhile and enjoy our time off.”

Thank you so much for stopping by today! I hope you're enjoying this month's challenge responses. If you like what you're reading here, spread the word and keep coming back to read more.
