This week, I have two more contemporary romance novels for you, but they're by the same author. I enjoyed the first one enough to check out the next one in the series, but... Well, let's just get to the reviews.
Book Review: Make-Believe Husband (Make-Believe series) by Vivi Holt
Make-Believe Husband by Vivi Holt
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I enjoyed this book, especially that it was a clean romance read with flawed characters who had some struggles to overcome, both in the life they lived and inside themselves. I enjoyed it enough to read the second book in the series, too.
I think what really drew me in was just the need to see how the heroine would deal with everything that was happening in her life. I was invested in her progress and rooted for her success. The hero was interesting, but almost too good to be true, which I guess is more often the case in a romance novel.
One thing I had a problem with was the insane notion that you can't be friends with the person you fall in love with. I have a serious issue with that. I think a lot of marriages fail because the two people involved believe that lie. So yeah, big problem.
Otherwise, though, the grammar and style were mostly solid. The setting was well-done. And the characters were unique personalities. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves clean, contemporary romances of the Christian persuasion.

Book Review: Make-Believe Fiancé (Make-Believe series) by Vivi Holt
Make-Believe Fiancé by Vivi Holt
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I enjoyed the first book in this series enough that I decided to take a chance on the second one. I still liked the setting, the unique character personalities, and the plot. What I didn't like was how the author once again added in the 'we can't be friends if we're going to be in love' angle. Super disappointed in that and since it seems to be a running theme, I probably won't pick up another of her books. I also had a problem with the general behavior of the hero during the hurricane. It made me wonder if this author has been through a hurricane herself, or if she bothered to check the protocol. What I can believe more easily is that this author is a creative soul who has a heart for our four-legged friends. It's admirable, but not believable for a father of two young daughters who feels terrible about the fact his daughters no longer have a mother and who also has an excellent logical mind, to risk his own life in a hurricane to save a wayward pet. Again, admirable, but not believable.
I loved the struggle between the characters and the decisions they had to make up to a certain point but I felt like it went on too long. I loved how the ex was finally told goodbye but again felt like that dragged on too long.
Overall, this was a quick, clean romance novel with a Christian undertone. If you enjoy those kinds of books and feel my personal issues with this story wouldn't hinder your own enjoyment, then by all means, give this book a try.

I do like this author's writing style, so I've had some time to think since writing the last review. I may try some of her historical romances. There were a couple of covers that caught my eye so I'll look into the blurbs and see which ones really do seem like something I'd enjoy. Also, congratulations to Vivi on her recent spike in Amazon sales! Such news will always brighten an author's day. :)
