I've got a couple of mermaid tales for you this week. (xD) Seriously, though, these mermaid fantasy tales are totally different from each other and worth taking a look at, especially if you love the beautiful sea dwellers. I'm also continuing with the bookish photo challenges. One continues throughout the month of August, the other ended on the 15th.

I'm blown away! I certainly didn't know what to expect. Creatures of fantasy are a topic I love to read about and this book did not disappoint me at all.
Things I love about this book: 1. The unique words - When the author takes the time to create words to match unique cultures and characters in their story, I absolutely love that. 2. Well-written characters who are unique from each other - Yep, Skye Malone nailed this one. 3. Riveting plot - Bingo again! I'm going to read book two as soon as I'm able. I can't wait to see what happens next.
Thing I didn't like: The only thing I had a real issue with was the parents lying to the child for their entire life and sheltering them so hard it really is abusive. It's too reminiscent of Cinderella for me. To be fair, this seemed to work well for the way the plot needed to play out. It's just not a favorite trope of mine. It also made me question how in the world Chloe didn't come out of that situation more scarred.
My favorite character is Zeke so far and I'd love to hear more of his story. My least favorite characters are probably Chloe's parents.
I would like to read more of her work and see what her other characters experience, though, because the author has really done a great job with this book. She's obviously researched her topic and has created vivid characters in a vivid world decorated with delightful details in just the right places.
If you love fantasy, mythical creatures in modern settings, clean reads, and adventure, you'd probably enjoy this one. I'd also recommend it for teens and up.

Book Review: Mermaid's Destiny by Mira Crest
Mermaid's Destiny by Mira Crest
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I loved the fairytale nature of this story. The world building was well done in the matter of cultures and how things were built. I'm not sure I liked how the magic worked toward the end. Also, the way the characters grew felt rushed in some places and slow in others.
If there's a second book, I'll read it because the tale itself is interesting. I want to know what happens next, even though there was enough closure at the end of the book. Overall, it's a fanciful tale full of hope, wonder, and some beautiful word pictures. I'd recommend it to people who enjoy fairytales and fantasy.
